Wonderful Multi-trail

The Bird to Gird bike path is a must-do when visiting Girdwood!  Some say it’s the most beautiful bike path in all of Southcentral Alaska. This gorgeous, paved trail is 12 miles one way (24 miles round trip) and winds along Turnagain arm connecting the small communities of Girdwood, Bird, and Indian together.  Built-in the mid 90’s, the bike path replaced the old Seward Highway and follows the contour of the mountain as it gradually climbs 1000 feet in elevation.

It’s perfect for all levels of bikers-cruising with your friends, speeding on a road bike, or grinding it out on a mountain bike.  A popular local trail, you’ll see dog walkers, hikers, and kids enjoying the path during the summer months.  The trail is surrounded by big conifer trees and you will find small waterfalls from glacier run-off.  There are multiple covered picnic locations to enjoy your lunch and a few restrooms along the way. Stop at the multiple interpretive pullouts with telescopes to learn about geological features and wildlife in the area.  If you are lucky you may even see the Bore Tide coming up Turnagain Arm and surfers trying their luck to catch the wave.  Beluga Whales have also been spotted from the path.  But for sure, you will see beautiful views of snow-capped mountains and the ever-changing landscape of Turnagain Arm.

Getting There

There multiple ways to access this trail. Parking can be found at numerous locations along the Seward Highway.  It all depends upon how long you want to bike or hike. A few favorites are the parking lots in Bird by the campground and Bird Creek Point State Parking area or the Girdwood Mall. There's good parking at the Bird Ridge Trailhead on the far western end of the pathway. Enjoy the day and experience the beauty of the Bird to Gird Bike Path.

Winter Use

This trail is used all year long for activities. In the winter, many people will nordic ski it, especially after a beautiful, fresh snowfall. You will also find lots of walkers with their dogs. Riders will use their fat bikes to get exercise in the Winter. The trail is not plowed or maintained.
