Whittier, The Western Gateway to Prince William Sound
Located just 24 miles south of Girdwood and through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, is the small town of Whittier, the tip of the iceberg to big adventure in Prince William Sound. Founded in the by the early Chugach Natives, Whittier grew during World War II as it provided a deep ice free port year round for supplies coming to interior Alaska. Today, visitors enjoy a variety of hiking, kayaking, glacier cruising, wildlife watching, fishing, shrimping, diving, hunting, berry picking, snow machining, biking, history tour walking, dining, shopping, ferry riding, paddle boarding, bird watching, cabin cruising, sailing. . . and sitting enjoying the awe inspiring views of Prince William Sound.
